FAQs About Bowling

Bowling remains one of the most popular indoor sports in the world, and it finds special popularity in the United States. Virtually every town has a bowling alley, a place for family and friends to gather and enjoy time together. Despite this popularity, many people do not know much about the sport. This article answers FAQs about bowling for those new to the sport or those looking to learn a little more.

Q: How old is bowling?
A: Although bowling technically was mentioned as having taken place in Ancient Egypt, the modern game began over 100 years ago when creators established the rules for ten-pin bowling.
Q: Is bowling really a sport?
A: Of course bowling is a sport. Many people picture the stereotypical bowler as overweight and out-of-shape when, in fact, bowling remains an effective anaerobic exercise. The motion of the bowling grip exercises little-used muscles. Anyone who has not bowled in a while and plays three or four games can attest to this. Like any other sport, bowling requires that players first warm up and stretch to prevent injury.
Q: How should players deliver a ball down the lane?
A: No two players deliver the ball in the same way, but two primary methods exist. When beginner players enjoy the sport, they often throw the ball straight down the lane. Although this may seem like the purpose of the game, advanced players know it is not. Just like a Frisbee remains accurate if it spins, a bowling ball is accurate only with the proper spin. Advanced players twist the ball at the end of the delivery, causing it to hook down the lane. This keeps a shot both powerful and accurate. Straight shots tend to lose both momentum and accuracy as they move down the lane.
