How to Hold a Bowling Ball

The key to bowling a great game is not how hard you roll the ball, but how well you grip the ball. An improperly fitted bowling ball can throw off the best player's game. Check out these basic steps for selecting the ball that is best for you.

  1. First: Choosing the right bowling ball

Whether you are bowling from the rack or getting outfitted for a new bowling ball from the pro shop, start with finding a ball that does not have a thumb hole that is too big or too small. Put your thumb all the way in the thumb hole, and lay your hand or the span of your hand palm flat over the ball so the second crease in the middle and ring fingers are about a quarter of an inch over the first edge of the finger holes on the bowling ball. Next, make sure the finger holes are not too big or too tight.

  2. Second: How to grip the ball

As you hold the ball, put your fingers about a quarter inch from the second crease with your thumb all the way in the hole. Rotate the ball so that your hand and palm are under it, and hold the ball to your side at about waist level. The ball should fit your hand comfortably. Check that it is not too loose or too tight. Walk through the four step approach, and as you release the ball, pull out your thumb first, followed by your fingers.
