Knowing What Size Ball to Use

If you love bowling and do it often, eventually you are going to want to purchase your own bowling ball. Before you take the leap and purchase a ball, there are a number of things you need to know. The wrong ball may negatively affect your game, and hurt your hand as well.
Just your size
The first consideration is the size of the ball. If the ball is too heavy, you may find it difficult to maneuver. If it is too light, you may have trouble keeping it from bouncing when it should roll smoothly down the lane. The ideal size is a ball that is about 1/10th of your body weight; a 150 pound man should choose a 15 pound ball.
Holes
It is important that your fingers fit snugly but not uncomfortably into the holes. If the thumb fits comfortably into the thumb hole, then lay your hand on the ball's surface. If the middle joints reach the two finger holes without stretching, then the ball is suitable. Many bowlers have balls custom made for them, but this is expensive.
Materials
Choosing the right material is almost as important as the prior two considerations. Plastic balls offer good control, making them a good choice for beginners or when taking down spares. This is what most alleys use for house balls. Urethane balls are good for hook shots, and these are the type that most advanced and professional bowlers use for their game.
The best ball for you is the one that is neither too light nor too heavy, where your fingers and thumb fit comfortably in the holes. You have a choice when it comes to materials, but comfort and ease of use is the key to knowing what to look for in a bowling ball.
